Confidently assess and design basic treatment protocols for a range of digestive disorders
by addressing root causes with Ayurveda

By the end of this course, students will have the information to:

  • Systematically assess a patient's agni using trividha pariksha and offer recommendations to restore balanced digestive fire.

  • Distinguish clinical patterns of symptoms for common digestive disorders across the continuum of samprapti or disease development from mild to more advanced presentations.

  • Design effective initial treatment protocols for early stage digestive disorders incorporating specific food recommendations, lifestyle guidance, and simple herbal formulations.

Course Description

This course offers a systematic exploration of digestion, metabolism, and elimination as the foundation of health, providing a clear framework for treating both acute and chronic digestive disease conditions and restoring health.

We will begin by examining the structure and function of the digestive system through the concepts of agni, āma, and the doshas. We will provide an in-depth explanation of the functional relationships between jathara agni in the stomach/small intestines, bhuta agni in the liver, and dhatu agni in the tissues. We will detail how different types of āma are generated and how to eliminate āma

We will then explore how to assess agni through the threefold method of sparshana (palpation/touch), darshana (careful observation) and prashna (questioning), as well as how to restore proper agni through ahara (food practices), vihara (lifestyle factors), and basic aushadha (medicine). In addition to classical Ayurveda text references, we will draw from clinical case studies so students understand concrete strategies for correcting agni imbalance.
Then we will turn to specific digestive disease development. Common conditions will be analyzed with attention to dosha involvement, tissue impact (dhatu), and channel function (srotamsi). We will explore the continuum of possible clinical presentations of ajeerna (indigestion), grahani (IBS), gulma (phantom tumor), udaram (abdominal distention), arshas (hemorrhoids), pandu (anemia/malabsorption), amla pitta (hyperacidity), and prameha (diabetes), as well as eating disorders and relevant infections. (*NOTE: Allopathic/western medical disease names are offered here for reference only, as approximations of the original Sanskrit terms and conditions they describe.)

A major focus will be practical treatment examples from case studies, exploring how each digestive disorder can be addressed through Ayurveda principles and strategies, including simple herbal medicines/formulations, individualized dietary guidelines, daily routines (dinacharya), seasonal considerations (rtucharya), and supportive lifestyle practices.

By the end of the course, students will be equipped to assess digestive imbalances holistically and design thoughtful, effective initial treatment approaches rooted in the principles of Ayurveda.
